“MAINTAINER.SAP 2005” goes to the Swiss Federal Railways AG (SBB)

This year, too, the participants in the 10th T.A. Cook congress for "Maintenance and Service Management with SAP" chose the best maintenance project in the SAP environment to be the "Maintainer.SAP 2005”. The prize went to the Swiss Federal Railways (SBB). Their presentation “MARS - Maintenance Application for RS” garnered the favour of the audience, which placed the SBB ahead of this year’s three second-place winners: Gauselmann AG (topic: Project Coordination of the Technical Field Service, KTA), DaimlerChrysler (topic: Budget Planning of Maintenance according to the Century Formula) and Bayer Business Services GmbH (topic: An Eye on Everything: The Technical Shift Log).
The objective of the SBB project MARS was essentially to build up suitable IT support for the new service processes (new upkeep processes, modularisation of the services, leadership role of the fleet management, etc.) based on the existing SAP components already in use, PM included. Problems in the mere standard implementation occurred primarily in practically coping with the flood of orders, in time confirmations with confirmation and order completion and in the large amount of management for maintenance schedules. As a solution, some z-transactions were developed for planning, printing, and confirming orders etc. This now allows maintenance work, particularly maintenance work on trains available only within a narrow time window, to be cleanly planned, scheduled and carried out – all with a high degree of automation on the part of the IT. Actualised annual savings in the six-digit range only highlight the success of the project.
The “MAINTAINER.SAP” prize, endowed by SAP AG and T.A. Cook Consultants, is meant to put more focus on how successful IT projects in maintenance and technical service are important for company productivity. A jury of experts selected the four most promising entries from all the submissions. These four finalists presented their projects to the specialist audience at the congress, which were then subjected to an audience vote. The award carries a prize of €3,500 for 1st place and €1,000 for each 2nd place. This is the sixth time the prize has been awarded.
